Das hat damit zu tun, dass das Beobachtbare Zeichen für tieferliegende (und nichtexplizite) Bedeutungsschichten ist. Angemessenes Verständnis bedeutet, die Zeichen einer fremden Kultur nach deren Bedeutungscodes interpretieren zu können.

The fish then sees that things are not as they use(d) to be. The fish then feels that things are not as they should be. Kultur hat immer mit Bevorzugung und Bewertung zu tun, und die Muster und Maßstäbe, nach denen die Bewertung vorgenommen wird, sind dem Höhlenbewohner der entsprechenden Kultur zunächst nicht als solche wahrnehmbar. Metapher: Erst wenn man die Brille absetzt, sieht man die Brille. Zuvor sieht man durch die Brille hindurch die Welt, wie sie (so meint man) ist.

Ein ähnliches Muster von 'Unsichtbarkeit durch Gewohnheit und In-Anspruch-Nahme' gilt übrigens für die Gegenstände bzw. die Forschungsperspektive der Erkenntnistheorie. Erkenntnistheorie untersucht die Bedingungen der Möglichkeit von Erkenntnis überhaupt, Kulturtheorie untersucht entsprechend (auf einem konkreteren Level) die Bedingungen und Strukturen der Gegebenheiten unterschiedlicher Interpretations- und Handlungsmuster in den einzelnen Kulturen. Beide Sichtweisen nehmen den Unterschied von Welt vs. Weltdeutung in Anspruch.

Wikipedia: "Die zunehmende Bekanntschaft mit fremden Völkern und die damit einhergehende Einsicht in die Pluralität religiöser Vorstellungen, Weltbilder und lokaler Sitten und Gebräuche führte bereits in der antiken Sophistik zur Entwicklung relativistischer Auffassungen."
